Anil Kumble Wants Kuldeep Yadav Back in Tests

Former India captain and legendary spinner Anil Kumble has strongly advocated for the inclusion of left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav in India’s Test squad. Kumble believes that Kuldeep brings the much-needed “X-factor” to the side and has the ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs in the longest format.

Kuldeep, who was overlooked for the recent England tour, utilized the break to sharpen his skills and regain rhythm. His outstanding comeback in the Asia Cup 2025 has reignited the debate over his Test selection. In just two matches during the tournament, Kuldeep showcased his match-winning abilities by taking seven wickets, proving once again why he is considered one of India’s most potent spin options.

Kumble praised Kuldeep’s temperament and variety, stating that his unique wrist-spin could play a decisive role in turning matches in India’s favor. “Kuldeep has the talent to pick up 20 wickets in a Test series. His ability to outfox batters with flight, drift, and sharp turn is something India must utilize in red-ball cricket,” Kumble said.

India’s spin department has seen healthy competition in recent years, with players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel cementing their roles. However, Kumble feels Kuldeep offers a different dimension, especially on pitches that demand wrist-spin variety.

Kuldeep’s career has been a mix of highs and lows, with injuries and inconsistent opportunities affecting his Test journey. He last played a Test for India in 2022, but his recent white-ball success could pave the way for a red-ball comeback. With the upcoming Test series on the horizon, selectors may now have to seriously consider Kumble’s recommendation.

Cricket experts and fans alike have echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Kuldeep’s recent form as evidence of his readiness. If included, his presence could strengthen India’s bowling attack and add more depth to their spin arsenal.

Kuldeep himself has expressed his desire to return to Test cricket, stating that donning the whites for India remains his biggest motivation. His performances in the Asia Cup have only strengthened his case for a recall, and all eyes will now be on the Indian selectors.
